The two most used ferry routes from Spain to Morocco are Tarifa-Tangier Ville (about 1 hour, arriving in central Tangier, ideal for foot passengers and day trips) and Algeciras-Tanger Med (about 1.5 hours, arriving at the big port some forty kilometres east of Tangier, preferred for cars and campervans). Longer routes link Málaga, Motril or Almería to Nador, Melilla, Al Hoceima or Tanger Med, and crossings of more than a day leave from Sète in France and Barcelona for Tanger Med. A valid passport is enough for most EU, UK and US travellers; police formalities happen at the port or on board depending on the route. Tanger Med is one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, connected to the motorway towards Tangier, Tetouan, Rabat and Fes. It is the most frequent route for vehicles. Allow about 40 minutes' drive to central Tangier.
