Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay: which desert to choose?

Three deserts, three experiences. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga has the real orange sand dunes, up to 150 m high — the most spectacular, but 9 h from Marrakech (a 3-day circuit is best). Erg Chigaga near Zagora is reachable in 2 days and stays wilder and less crowded. The Agafay desert, just 40 min from Marrakech, is a stony desert (no dunes), perfect for a dinner-show or an overnight bivouac when time is short. For a first trip with real dunes, Merzouga is worth the drive; for a quick escape, Agafay is unbeatable.

What is a night in a desert camp like?

A night under the stars is the highlight of any circuit. You reach camp by camel at sunset, dine on tagine around the fire to the sound of Berber drums, then sleep in a caidal tent. Camps range from standard (shared tents, communal facilities) to luxury (private tents with a real bathroom, sometimes a pool). Desert nights are cool even in summer — bring a warm layer. At dawn, sunrise over the dunes in total silence justifies the trip on its own.
