Cultural tours in Morocco: medinas, monuments, museums

Quick answer

For a first visit, choose a guided medina tour (Marrakech or Fes): you avoid getting lost, learn the history and support local craft. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is one of the few places of worship open to non-Muslims.

Marrakech or Fes: which medina to visit?

Both medinas are UNESCO-listed but offer different moods. Marrakech is more theatrical and touristy: Jemaa el-Fna square, the colourful souks, the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs fit into a guided half-day. Fes is more authentic and labyrinthine: its medina (Fes el-Bali) has nearly 9,000 alleys, the world's oldest university (Quaraouiyine) and the famous Chouara tanneries. An official guide is almost essential there to avoid getting lost. In short: Marrakech for a festive first immersion, Fes for history and craftsmanship in depth.

Morocco's must-see heritage sites

Beyond the medinas, Morocco has nine UNESCO sites. In Casablanca, the Hassan II Mosque is one of the few places of worship open to non-Muslims, with its 210 m minaret over the ocean. The Kasbah of the Udayas and the Hassan Tower in Rabat tell the story of the Almohad dynasty. Aït Ben Haddou, an earthen ksar at the foot of the Atlas, has been a film set many times (Gladiator, Game of Thrones) and pairs with Ouarzazate. Volubilis, near Meknes, preserves superb Roman mosaics. A guided tour adds the historical context that turns these stones into a living story.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide for the medina?

It's not mandatory, but an official guide keeps fake guides away, saves time and unlocks little-known sites and workshops.

Can you enter mosques in Morocco?

Most are reserved for Muslims. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is an exception and can be visited with a guided ticket.

How much does a guided medina tour cost?

A 3-4 h guided tour usually costs €15-40 per person in a small group, more for a private guide. Monument tickets (Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, Hassan II Mosque) are sometimes extra. Book online for a fixed price and a licensed official guide.

How long do I need to visit a medina?

Allow a half-day (3-4 h) with a guide for a medina's essentials. Fes, larger and more complex, deserves a full day. Marrakech works well in two parts: the medina and souks in the morning, the gardens and palaces in the afternoon.

Can I take photos in the medina?

Yes for alleys, monuments and stalls, but always ask before photographing a person — some artisans or vendors expect a small tip. Avoid photographing inside working mosques. A guide will point out the best viewpoints and the right etiquette.
