Nicknamed Africa's 'Windy City', Essaouira is one of Morocco's best board-sport spots. Its sheltered bay has gentle waves ideal for learning to surf, while the steady trade winds (especially April to September) make it a kitesurf and windsurf paradise. Schools rent all the gear and run lessons for every level with qualified instructors.
Off the water, Essaouira's vast beach and the neighbouring argan forest are perfect for quad or buggy rides among dunes, seafront and Berber villages. For a gentler, family-friendly experience, choose a sunset camel or horseback ride along the ocean. These activities usually last 1 to 2 hours and suit beginners.
Essaouira's UNESCO medina is best discovered with a guide: 18th-century ramparts, a fishing port of blue boats, thuya-wood marquetry workshops and art galleries. The town also pulses to Gnaoua music. For flavours, a food tour or cooking class lets you taste grilled port fish, pastilla and mint tea.
Essaouira is one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech (2.5h drive), with a stop at an argan oil cooperative on the way. Weather-wise, the town stays mild year-round: spring and autumn are perfect for sightseeing, while windy summers (June–August) delight board-sport fans. The Gnaoua Festival in June draws thousands of visitors.
