Quad, buggy and 4x4: adventure in the desert

Motorised rides are the most playful way to explore Morocco's landscapes. Near Marrakech, the Agafay desert and the palm grove are tackled by quad or buggy in a half-day, often with a Berber tea break and sunset. In Agadir and Essaouira, circuits mix argan forest, dunes and beach. In Merzouga, a quad complements a night in camp. No experience is needed: a briefing, helmet and supervision are provided, and most rides accept beginners from 16 (younger passengers possible). Bring goggles and a scarf against the dust.

Hiking and trekking in the Atlas

The High Atlas, 90 min from Marrakech, has the country's finest hikes. The Ourika Valley and Imlil suit day trips to Berber villages, the Setti Fatma waterfalls and the plateaus. For the fit, Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak, is climbed in 2 days from April to October with a guide and a refuge night. In spring the valleys fill with almond blossom; in summer the altitude offers welcome cool. Good shoes, water and a windbreaker are essential, even in fine weather.

Guides to plan your visit

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience for surf or kitesurf?

No, beginner lessons exist with an instructor and gear provided. For kitesurf in Dakhla, plan a few days of lessons to become independent.

When to climb Toubkal?

April to October for a snow-free climb; in winter it requires crampons, an ice axe and a mountain guide.

What is the minimum age for quad or buggy?

To drive a quad you usually must be 16 or 18 (a licence is sometimes required). Younger children can often ride as passengers with an adult, or in a two-seater buggy driven by an instructor. Check the required age on the activity listing; helmet and briefing are always provided.

Are adventure activities supervised and insured?

Yes: serious operators provide gear, a safety briefing and qualified instructors. Check the listing that insurance and equipment are included. For higher-risk sports (paragliding, canyoning, high mountains), travel insurance covering sports activities is strongly recommended.

When is the best surf season in Morocco?

September to April for the best swells at Taghazout and Agadir, with bigger winter waves for advanced surfers. Summer is ideal for beginners (gentler waves) and for kitesurf, driven by the trade winds. A wetsuit is advised year-round as the Atlantic stays cool.
