Golf in Morocco: Best Courses and Where to Play

Morocco has a long golfing tradition, originally driven by King Hassan II's passion for the sport. The country now has internationally renowned courses in Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir and El Jadida, with a climate that allows play for much of the year.

Morocco's most prestigious course is Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, designed by Robert Trent Jones within a 440-hectare cork oak forest: it hosts the Trophée Hassan II (PGA Tour Champions) and the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup (Ladies European Tour). Marrakech offers Africa's oldest course (Royal Golf Club, 1927) and one of the continent's best-rated (Assoufid, opened 2014). Agadir, thanks to its mild Atlantic climate, is playable almost year-round. El Jadida combines golf with a beach stay at the Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort. Royal Golf Dar Es Salam has 45 holes across three courses (Red, Blue, Green), and in Agadir, the Taghazout Bay Golf Course spans 76 hectares facing the ocean, about 15 minutes north of the city. Marrakech Royal Golf Club (1927) and Assoufid Golf Club (2014, named Africa's best course) round out the region well.

Rabat: Royal Golf Dar Es Salam

Set within a 440-hectare cork oak forest on the outskirts of Rabat, Royal Golf Dar Es Salam was designed by American architect Robert Trent Jones. It has 45 holes across three courses: the Red (par 73, 6,980 m), the Blue (par 72, 6,467 m) and the Green (par 64, 4,340 m). It is the historic host of the Trophée Hassan II, a PGA Tour Champions event played in Rabat for decades, and of the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup, a Ladies European Tour stop. The course has been named Course of the Year by Asian Tour players.

Marrakech: history and scenery

Marrakech Royal Golf Club, built in 1927, is one of Africa's oldest courses and plays out with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. More recently, Assoufid Golf Club, opened in 2014, takes a desert-style approach and has been awarded Morocco's and Africa's best golf course. Marrakech clusters several other courses just minutes from the city centre, making it a practical base to combine golf with exploring the city — see what to do in Marrakech and the bookable activities in Marrakech for your non-golf days.

Agadir: golf all year round

Agadir's mild Atlantic climate allows golf almost year-round, without the heat spikes of inland Morocco. The Taghazout Bay Golf Course, about 15 minutes north of Agadir, spans 76 hectares with ocean views. The city also has a 36-hole address, combining a championship course with wide fairways and a second, more technical one. See what to do in Agadir for the rest of the trip.

El Jadida: golf and seaside

In El Jadida, the Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort offers an 18-hole course integrated into a full beach complex (private beach, pools, spa). It's the simplest option for a trip combining golf, relaxation and family time — details in our where to stay in El Jadida guide.

Planning a golf trip to Morocco

How to plan a golf trip to Morocco: 5 steps

A simple method to avoid arriving without a tee time or the right gear.

  1. Choose the region based on seasonRabat and Marrakech have a more seasonally contrasted climate, while Agadir stays playable almost year-round thanks to the Atlantic influence. Favour Agadir in summer, Marrakech and Rabat in spring or autumn.
  2. Book tee times ahead in high seasonThe most sought-after courses, especially Royal Golf Dar Es Salam during tournament periods, get booked several weeks ahead in high season (spring, autumn).
  3. Check the club's access requirementsSome clubs require a handicap certificate or membership at an affiliated club: contact the target course's office before booking a flight or accommodation around the golf.
  4. Plan equipment or on-site rentalMost major clubs offer club and cart rental. If travelling with your own gear, check checked-baggage conditions with your airline.
  5. Combine golf with exploring the cityThe main clubs sit close to Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir or El Jadida: book central accommodation to easily alternate golf days with cultural or beach outings.
