Practical road trip tips

Car type

  • Compact (Peugeot 208, Dacia Sandero, Renault Clio): 80% of the itinerary, more economical. Suffices for cities, highways, paved national roads.
  • Light SUV (Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson): recommended if you plan minor tracks at Merzouga, climb to Imlil, or travel with 4 people + bags.
  • 4x4: only if you plan serious desert tracks (Merzouga fossil mines, Draa crossing). Extra cost 30-50%.

Morocco roads

  • Highways (Casablanca-Marrakech, Casablanca-Tangier, Rabat-Fes): good, moderate tolls (10-50 MAD by section)
  • National roads: generally good quality, but village crossings with speed bumps and radars
  • Tizi n'Tichka (Atlas): recently renovated but tight hairpins, take your time
  • Tracks: avoid without a 4x4 and experience

Driving

  • Speed limits: 40-60 km/h in town (very frequent radars), 100 km/h roads, 120 km/h highways
  • Police: frequent checks (papers, license, highway sticker). Stay polite, patient, soft-spoken
  • Speed bumps: numerous at village entrance/exit, unsigned. Stay alert
  • Mopeds and carts: common on national roads. Safety distance essential
  • Night driving: avoid outside cities (animals, unlit bikes, horses)

Fuel

Shell, Total, Afriquia stations everywhere in towns, rarer in the South. Fill up leaving Errachidia / Ouarzazate before desert zones. Diesel ~11-12 MAD/L, gasoline ~13-14 MAD/L.

Parking

  • Cities: paid in blue zones, informal wardens (5-20 MAD by duration)
  • Medinas: dedicated parking around gates (guarded 30-50 MAD/day)
  • Roads: secured rest areas in tourist zones

Who is this road trip ideal for?

Mistakes to avoid

FAQ — 14-day Morocco road trip

Do I need an international permit to drive in Morocco?

European B license accepted for 12 months of tourist stay. International permit strongly recommended: facilitates any checks and required by some rental companies.

What type of car for Morocco?

Compact suffices for 80% of the itinerary. Light SUV or 4x4 useful for Merzouga or Imlil tracks. Avoid family sedans (suspension too low for some roads).

How much does fuel cost in Morocco?

Diesel ~11-12 MAD/L. Gasoline ~13-14 MAD/L. A 3,000 km loop consumes about €200-280 by car type.

Is Morocco road safety good?

Good on highways. More vigilant on national roads (mopeds, animals, unsigned speed bumps). Imperatively avoid night driving outside cities.

Do I need complementary insurance?

Yes. Take all-risk insurance at the rental + travel complementary covering repatriation, medical and luggage. Check the excess (often €600-1,500).

Can I do this road trip in winter?

Possible but with precautions: possible snow on Tizi n'Tichka, cool evenings (5-10°C), short daylight. Prefer December-February if you avoid long roads after 5pm.

Can I split this road trip into 2 stays?

Yes, great idea: 7-day north stay (Casablanca-Rabat-Tangier-Chefchaouen-Fes) + 7-day south stay (Marrakech-Merzouga-Aït Ben Haddou-Essaouira).

Can I do this route without renting a car?

Hardly. For main cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Fes, Marrakech), trains and buses suffice. But for Chefchaouen, Merzouga, Aït Ben Haddou and Essaouira in a coherent road trip, the car is highly advantageous. Alternative: private driver (~€1,500-2,500 over 14 days).

Bottom line

14 days driving Morocco is the most complete and freest formula to discover the country. ~3,000 km, ~3h driving/day on average, book key accommodations ahead.

My 3 key tips:

  1. Compact car + all-risk insurance = winning equation 80% of the time.
  2. Book Merzouga, Fes, Marrakech and Essaouira at least 2 months ahead in high season.
  3. Couple with a Morocco eSIM and travel insurance: combined at about €50-80 for 14 days, game changer.
