Marrakech Airport Arrival: Transfers, Taxis and Practical Tips
Marrakech Menara (RAK) is one of Morocco's closest airports to its city centre: roughly 6 km from the medina, or 15 to 25 minutes by road outside rush hour. It's short — but it's also where the trip's first negotiation happens, and the taxi is where travellers are most often overcharged.
From Marrakech Menara, bus L19 (Alsa) runs to Jemaa el-Fna for about 30 MAD, every 20 to 30 minutes, from roughly 6am to midnight, taking 25 to 45 minutes. In a petit taxi, insist on the meter or agree the fare before you get in: quoted prices vary widely between sources and by time of day, with a night surcharge after 10pm. A booked transfer really only pays off with heavy luggage, in a group, or on a late arrival. Carry small notes from the airport onward: neither the bus nor taxis give change easily on a 200 MAD bill. Since the medina is pedestrian, give the driver the nearest gate to your riad (Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, Bab Ghmat…) — most riads then send someone to meet you there, often for free. For a rental car onward to Agafay, the Atlas or Essaouira, pick it up on departure day, not on arrival.

Bus L19, the honest option
The L19, run by Alsa, connects the airport to the centre and stops near Jemaa el-Fna as well as several hotels along the way. Budget about 30 MAD, a departure every 20 to 30 minutes, service roughly 6am to midnight, and 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. It's the simplest choice if you travel light: no haggling, posted fare.
Its limit is real: with two large suitcases at peak hour, or after the last departure, it stops working.
The petit taxi, and the actual question of price
This is where precision matters, because sources openly contradict each other. Some quote 50-80 MAD on the meter during the day, others describe a higher regulated fare, and drivers frequently offer a 150-200 MAD flat rate on arrival. One constant does emerge: the flat rate offered unprompted at the kerb is almost always above the metered price, and a surcharge applies after 10pm.
The practical rule holds whatever the exact tariff: insist on the meter, or agree the amount before the bags go in. Politely declining a price and waiting for the next taxi still works. Carry small notes — "I have no change" is the local classic.
The booked transfer
Its appeal isn't the price, it's removing uncertainty: a driver holding your name, the riad address passed on in advance, a locked-in fare. It genuinely pays in three cases: a late-arriving flight, a family with children and luggage, or a first trip with a riad address that's hard to explain.

Renting a car to reach the medina is counterproductive: the old city is largely pedestrian, parking is a problem and you'll pay for rental days you can't use. Only pick up a vehicle if you're leaving Marrakech — Agafay, the Atlas, Essaouira, Ouarzazate — and ideally on your departure day, not on arrival.

The medina is pedestrian — no vehicle drops you at the riad door. Here's how to avoid the one real friction point on arrival.
- Withdraw dirhams before leaving the terminalThe dirham can't be obtained outside Morocco. Use an ATM in the terminal and ask for small notes: neither the bus nor taxi drivers give change easily on a 200 MAD bill.
