Camel caravan on the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga at sunrise

Drâa-Tafilalet, Maroc

Merzouga

Gateway to the Sahara, where the real dunes begin

Quick answer

Merzouga is reached in 8-9 hours by road from Marrakech (3-day tour via Aït Ben Haddou) or about 7 hours from Fes. The must-do: a sunset camel ride, a night in a desert camp (€30-250 depending on comfort) and sunrise over the dunes. Best time: October to April.

Merzouga is the gateway to Morocco's true Sahara: the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 metres, the postcard image of the desert. A sunset camel ride, a night in a Berber camp under light-pollution-free skies and sunrise over the sand make it the country's most authentic desert experience.

Frequently asked questions

How many days should I plan for Merzouga?

A 3-day / 2-night tour from Marrakech is the classic format: one day on the road (stops at Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges), one night camped in the dunes, then the return trip. A 2-day / 1-night version exists but leaves little time on site.

Merzouga or Agafay: what's the difference?

Agafay is a stone desert 40 minutes from Marrakech (a half-day or overnight trip), convenient but without real sand dunes. Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco's only true sand dunes, but needs a 2-3 day tour. See our Agafay or Merzouga comparison.

Is it cold at night in the desert?

Yes, especially October to March: nights can drop close to 0°C while daytime highs exceed 20-25°C. Always pack a warm jacket, even in a luxury camp.
