Mistakes to avoid

FAQ — 7-day northern Morocco itinerary

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

Convenient but not mandatory. Al Boraq trains and CTM buses cover all main stages. A car helps mainly for Akchour (Chefchaouen) and Volubilis-Meknes flexibility.

How many days in Chefchaouen?

1-2 days. 1 day for the medina, +1 if you include Akchour or want crowd-free morning photos. 2 nights = ideal.

Is Volubilis worth a day-trip from Fes?

Yes: Morocco's only well-preserved Roman site, UNESCO-listed. Exceptional mosaics. Combine with Meknes for a full day (8-10h).

Is this itinerary good in winter?

Yes, it's even one of Morocco's best winter destinations — mild climate versus the cool Atlas.

Can I start with Casablanca instead of Tangier?

Yes: Casablanca → Rabat → Fes → Chefchaouen → Tangier in reverse. Return flight from Tangier.

What budget for 7 days in northern Morocco?

€800-1500/person excluding European flight in 3-4★. With flight: €1000-1900/person. Down to €600/person in backpacker mode without a car.

Bottom line

The 7-day northern Morocco itinerary offers a rich cultural alternative to the classic Marrakech-desert: ideal for a 2nd Morocco trip, pure-culture travelers, a winter stay (mild climate), and photographers (Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Fes).

My 3 key tips: stay 2 nights in Chefchaouen (morning photos + Akchour); take an official guide in Fes on D5; do Volubilis + Meknes as a full day-trip, not a half-day.
