Marrakech or Essaouira: Which City to Choose?
Buzzing Marrakech, laid-back Essaouira: two cities about 190 km apart, with opposite atmospheres. Here is the comparison criterion by criterion, and the right way to combine both if you have a week.
Choose Marrakech for intensity: palaces and madrasas, huge souks, Jemaa el-Fna square, riads with pools, and trips to the Agafay desert, the Atlas and the Ouzoud waterfalls. Choose Essaouira for calm: a medina listed by UNESCO in 2001, ramparts facing the ocean, a fishing port, a beach, surfing and wind, with a much slower pace and far less heat in summer. Marrakech is ideal for a first trip and a cultural city break; Essaouira for relaxing, surfing or escaping the heat.
